Energy
Solar hydrogen technology backed by over a decade of R&D and peer-reviewed academic validation — targeting clean fuel production at a fraction of conventional costs.
Our Thesis
Bergen & Bergen invests in hydrogen infrastructure that delivers clean, efficient and cost-competitive energy. We back proprietary technology with strong scientific foundations and the scale potential to matter — not incremental improvements, but step-changes in how clean fuel is produced and priced.
The Technology
NX Fuels has developed a proprietary artificial photosynthesis process that converts water and sunlight directly into green hydrogen, using no grid electricity and producing no carbon emissions in operation.
The core of the technology is a set of InGaN micro-network structures that replicate the natural photosynthesis process — stable, scalable and solar-powered. This architecture eliminates dependence on conventional electrolysis and the grid infrastructure it requires.
Validated Performance
The technology has been validated at more than 3,000 hours of continuous operation. Research has been published in Nature, Nature Communications and Nature Synthesis. The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory described the approach as ‘a real game changer’.
NX Fuels has received more than a decade of R&D funding totalling over $30 million.

Cost Position
NX Fuels’ process costs up to 12 times less than steam methane reforming with carbon capture and up to 3 times less than photovoltaic electrolysis per kilogram of hydrogen produced. On-site production eliminates transportation costs — a further structural advantage at commercial scale.
Market Context
The global green hydrogen market has a total addressable market of $210 billion. Demand is driven by the energy transition and by the need for cost-competitive clean fuel alternatives in heavy industry, transport and power generation. Green hydrogen is forecast to grow from near zero today to 47% of global demand by 2030.
